What is Bikes in Schools?

A PE-based program that brings bikes, helmets, curriculum, and professional development into classrooms so biking becomes as accessible as any other PE activity.

Why Bikes in Schools for Shenendehowa School District?

  • Gives every kindergartner at the Atrea Early Learning Center (~700 children) the chance to learn to ride a bike

  • Removes the biggest barriers to cycling: cost, access, transportation, ability

  • Builds balance, coordination, endurance, whole-body fitness

  • Teaches a lifelong skill that supports independence and active living beyond the classroom

What is included in the Shenendehowa Bike Package:

  • 60 balance bikes, with pedal conversion kits

  • 60 helmets

  • 2 adult-sized balance bike and helmet for teachers

  • PE curriculum for Kindergarten PE teachers to follow

  • 1 day of Professional Development for PE teachers in order to set up PE teachers for success

How it works:

  • Full package delivered to school: bikes, helmets, curriculum

  • PE teachers are taught curriculum in-person by Shredders MTB staff

  • Students ride during PE: classes use balance bikes, skill progressions and age-appropriate lessons to get every student riding. Once the children have learned balance and steering, they are ready for pedaling - the pedals are added to the balance bike and off they go!
